Simulation Indicates Urban Campus Building Forms Influencing Aerosols Distribution in Taipei

Aerosols have been the major components of serious air pollutants in metropolitan areas in Taiwan. By using a CFD simulation software "Flovent 5.1", an elementary school campus in Taipei had been chosen to perform the simulation in order to understand the relation between two assumed urban campus building forms and their concentration distributions of PM_(10). In this study we have found that the different building forms would significantly affect the distribution of suspended particles of PM)(10). The results showed that (1) adaptation of the form that opened first floor building not only reduced the PM_(10) concentration for 80% with increasing the average wind speed 0.04 m/s on some spots, neighboring area can also get improved as far as to 10 meters, and (2) adaptation of the form of compacting building structure or adding some open spaces in building structure can similarly reduce the PM_(10) concentration to 17% for both cases. Actions to mitigate the concentration of aerosols need to be fortified for the building forms. The findings of this work will be helpful to building user, architects, urban designers and city decision makers.
