Barkhausen effect is a phenomenon, which is caused by a series of irreversible magnetization process, such as domain walls passing through pinning sites in ferromagnetic materials. In a magnetization curve (M vs. H), it is exhibited as a series of "jump" changes for magnetization M. The internal stress, cracks, non-magnetic impurities are main factors which cause irreversible magnetization changes. Using a specially designed instrument, the discontinuous change in M can be converted into an electronic signal, such as voltage pulses. After amplification and signal processing, it can be displayed to analyze the distribution of internal stress, grain sizes, impurities, dislocations, cracks etc. in magnetic materials. Therefore, Barkhausen effect is a very effective tool for non-destructive testing (NDT) in industrial field, such as steel bridges, rails, ships, aircrafts and pressure containers. In this contribution, we discuss the correlations between the Barkhausen signals and internal stress, cracks, grain sizes, or impurities in magnetic material (carbon steels on most occasions), the technique to interpret the Barkhausen signals, its new applications in industries and the NDT instruments to detect Barkhausen signals.
