COMPARING THE COSTS OF ABATEMENT FOR THE NON-CO_2 GREENHOUSE GASES IN THE INDUSTRIAL SECTOR

The EEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme has carried out a study to update its abatement potential and cost data on Non-CO_2 greenhouse gases in the industrial sector. The study has shown that substantial growth in the emissions of the Non-CO_2 greenhouse gases is predicted to occur between now and 2020. The current relative importance of these gases, compared to CO_2 will, therefore, remain until 2020. The cost curves analyses indicate that significant potential exists to cost effectively reduce emissions of the Non-CO_2 greenhouse gases. The study indicates that up to 1 050 Mt/y CO_2 equivalent could be abated at costs of typically -$10 to $0/t CO_2 equivalent. These cost effective measures offer early opportunities for reductions of emissions of greenhouse gases. Thus the abatement of the Non-CO_2 greenhouse gases should figure highly in any near term strategy to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.
