In China, few studies have examined how indoor residential conditions relate to outdoor ambient climate. In this research, the two weeks indoor temperature, relative humidity (RH), and absolute humidity (AH) were measured in 117 homes distributed in six Chinese cities during different seasons. Daily mean values of temperature, RH and AH in living room and children's bedroom were calculated, and the relationships between indoor and outdoor temperatures, RH and AH were analysed by using Pearson correlation coefficients. The results display a seasonal pattern both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor daily average temperature and AH are good indicators for indoor temperature and AH in hot summer and cold winter zone (Shanghai, Wuhan and Changsha) through a year. While only AH is a good indicator for indoor AH in cold (Beijing, Dalian) & severe cold (Harbin) climate zones during summer and transient seasons. When outdoor daily average temperature were below 15°C, indoor temperatures obviously showed the two groups. The reason is that in the houses of Harbin, Beijing and Dalian, the central heating system is still operated in spring. Consequently, indoor daily average temperature in cold & severe cold zone were obviously higher than that of in hot summer and cold winter zone in cold days. Studies relating outdoor weather to human health should take into consideration how well outdoor conditions serve as indicators of indoor or personal weather exposure in the studied geographical area.
