The purpose of this study is to assess particulate matter (PM) concentration in social housing buildings. Number concentration of small (>0.5 μm) and large (>2.5 μm) particles were measured for two periods, each for one week, in 75 apartments some of which included smoking. At the same time, portable air cleaners with HEPA filters were deployed to evaluate total suspended particle (TSP) mass using a gravimetric approach. The results showed a large variation in PM concentration across units and a significant increase in PM number concentration due to smoking. Higher TSP did not correspond to higher number concentration, which suggests caution when interpreting the absolute results of low-cost particle instruments.
