With certain autoclave operations, especially where gassing is concerned process parameters often change repeatedly. Frequent pressure and temperature fluctuations are par for the course, especially during system commissioning. Sudden losses of pressure can result in increased leakage and wear rates at the mechanical seals. Independent from various buffer liquid pressuring options there will be a seal deflection problem where non-symmetrical seal rings are used. In certain cases, seal rings will blister in addition to the increased wear they experience. By using a mechanical seal, design with symmetrical seal rings there is no bending moment or excessive movement in case of alternating pressure. EKATO found that with applications where the operational pressures exceed 20bar (290PSI) with tendency to have fluctuating pressure characteristics symmetrical seal ring design can hold in a notable benefit ensuring continuous uninterrupted operation of the autoclaves.
