Increased consumption of apples and apple-derived products has been associated with prevention of cancer. The phytochemicals found in apples exert potent antioxidant activities and antiproliferative effects on cancer cells. Phloretin (Ph) is found in apples and other fruits known to suppress transmembranous glucose transport and inhibit protein kinase C. It has also been suggested that Ph is a specific inhibitor of glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2) in different human tissues. Some of the effects of Ph that have been demonstrated are the inhibition of human leukemic cell growth and the induction of apoptosis in melanoma cells by suppression of transmembrane glucose transport In vivo studies have also demonstrated that Ph inhibited the growth of bladder cancer and rat mammary adenocarcinoma cells. These in vitro and in vivo findings suggest a potential anti-tumor effect of Ph. However, little is known about the effect of Ph on human hepatoma cells.
