In the general context of this paper, we are concerned with the passive damping of structures containing viscoelastic layers. This research is motivated by the need for efficient numerical tools to deal with the medium frequency behaviour of industrial viscoelastic sandwich products. These products often show complex geometries and dimensions such that the modal density is high, limiting the application of the classical finite element method to relatively low frequencies. The partition of unity finite element method (PUFEM) is used to develop plate and shell elements adapted to the simulation of sandwich structures. With this approach, we adopt the general isoparametric framework and define the element shape functions as the product of partition of unity functions with arbitrary chosen enrichment functions.
