In algae and higher plants, the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of Photosystem II (PS II) is composed of three extrinsic proteins, PsbO, PsbP and PsbQ, and several ions including the Mn-cluster, Ca~(2+) and Cl~-.These proteins attach to Photosystem IIon the luminal side of the thylakoid membrane. The PsbP protein, along with the PsbQ protein, are known to act as regulators of the Ca~(2+) and Cl~- concentrations, that are requited for effective oxygen evolution in Photosystem II. However, detailed functions of these proteins remain to be elucidated. In cyanobacteria so far the common view was that neither PsbP nor PsbQ are present and instead their functions are replaced by a 12kDa protein (PsbU) and a c-type cytochrome (PsbV). Recent reports, however, show that proteins with domains of PsbQ (Kashino et al 2002) and PsbP (Thornton et al 2004) (PsbQ-like and PsbP-like protein) are also associated with Photosystem II of cyanobacteria and have similar functions as in higher plants. The PsbP-like protein was found to bind to the PS II reaction center substoichiometrically (Thornton et al 2004).
