The Water Framework Directive (Directive 2000/60/EC) links water quality with the quality of whole river basin. Whilst water quality is well defined, it is more difficult to define basin quality and this is recognised as a key problem within landscapeecology. Using a case study within the Lombardy region (23852 km2), a highly anthropogenic landscape, we evaluate the fragmentation of forest and cultural landscapes, utilising three metrics (division, splitting index, effective mesh size and the threecorresponding auxiliary quantities, coherence, splitting density, net product). Using these metrics we explore the probability of two animals placed in different areas within the study area locating each other. This was achieved by comparing the administrative subdivision of the Lombardy region with an ecological subdivision based on river basin composition. Within each subdivision we evaluated the fragmentation metrics in both forest and agricultural landscapes. Our results indicate that administrativeboundaries often do not allow for an evaluation of ecological gradients, that river basins are a good ecological unit at which to evaluate landscape fragmentation and that mesh size and other fragmentation metrics are useful tools with which to assess the quality of river basins.
