Aquatic habitats of the UK agricultural landscapes: characterisation of invertebrate assemblages

The work presented here describes the collation of existing national freshwater datasets, analysed to characterise the invertebrate assemblages of aquatic habitats in the British agricultural landscape. A classification of agricultural landscapes wasdeveloped, based on soil parent material and soil hydrology, which identified 12 agricultural landscape classes. Non-agricultural lands (mainly uplands and urban areas) was identified as a separate landscape class. Invertebrate assemblages of streams, rivers, ponds and ditches were described. The results provide the first broad characterization of the invertebrate biota of freshwater habitats in the British agricultural landscape. Overall, ponds supported a high proportion of water bugs and water beetles, showing little between-landscape variation in the species richness of major taxonomic groups. Rivers and streams had more sensitive species, particularly Ephemoptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (EPT) taxa, and showed greater between-landscape variation in richness patterns. Ditches appeared to be intermediate in character between these two waterbody types.
