The European environment is characterised by a landscape mosaic composed not only by natural but also by cultural elements, presenting therefore a strong interaction between natural processes and human practices. These heterogeneous cultural landscapes are today threatened by the reduction of biological diversity and environmental continuity, and an increase of homogeneity, environmental barriers and ecological fragmentation. Alternatives to these trends have been found in the implementation of ecological networks in Italian regions, where the aim has been to integrate landscape ecology into land use planning and management in order to promote sustainable development and at the same time to reverse the continuing deterioration of the environment. Landscape ecology techniques and application, land use planning and management, development policies and stakeholders engagement has been used in the different regions. The case of the Umbria Region is explained here to illustrate processes and results reached thus far. The concept of an ecoregion, in addition, has been related to the development of ecological network to outline the spatial dimension and the latest linkages at regional level in Europe.
