The Rhodope Mountains are the densest populated mountains in Bulgaria and are divided into two distinct regions. The Western Rhodope is largely coniferous forest with over 70% coverage while the Eastern Rhodope has only a one-third coverage of primarily a deciduous, half of this which is plantation forestry. This study presents an assessment of forest changes for 10 year period (1990-2000). The results were derived using ArcGIS 8.2 and the CORINE digital landscape data base for Bulgaria. The aim is to present the percentages of afforestation and deforestation, and to address the widespread illegal logging and inappropriate forest management in the region.
