Difference of nitrate accumulation in petiole of spinach cultivars and its nutritional and physiological basis

Pot experiments using three spinach cultivars were carried out to study nitrate accumulation in different organs and its relationship to biomass, nitrate distribution in cell and the nitrate reductase activity (NRA). The results showed that the nitrate concentration in the petiole was the highest among different organs. The difference of nitrate concentration in the petiole could reflect the difference of nitrate accumulation among cultivars. The in vivo NRA, the ratio of the in vivo to in vitro NRA,the nitrate metabolic pool size (NMPS), and the ratio of NMPS to nitrate storage pool size (NSPS) of the blade were all negatively correlated with the nitrate concentration in the petioles. The too small NMPS was the reason why the petiole has much higher nitrate concentration than that in the blade.
