A greenhouse experiment was conducted hi a soil with low phosphorus content to study the symbiotic interaction between a nitrogen-fixing actinomycete Frankia, an ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi (Pisolithus alba IR100), an arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fangi(Glomus intraradices) and two (Allocasuarina verticillata and Casuarina glauca) actinorhizai plant species. Both plant species were inoculated with Frankia and in addition A. verticillata was inoculated with P. alba IR100 and G. intraradices whereas C. glauca was inoculated with G. intraradices only. Microsymbiotes significantly stimulated growth of both species. For A. verticillata, antagonism among the fungi isolates was observed with higher EM colonization. G. intraradices was more efficient in stimulating growth of C. glauca. Modulation was observed in association with mycorrhizal fungi for C. glauca and this was accompanied by higher yields compared to A. verticillata where there was no nodulation. Results indicate synergic effects of actinorhizaiand mycorrhizal symbioses on the nodulation, mycorrhizal colonization and growth of A. verticillata and C. glauca as well as antagonism in root colonization by different mycorrhizal types of fungi. The study underscores the importance of selecting compatible microsymbiotes for developing successful inoculation programs.
