A case study is presented of cross-correlations of ambient IMF and magnetic cloud parameters. The period studied is 15-24 November, 2003 containing the magnetic cloud which caused the largest storm of this solar cycle. Data are from an alignment of 4 spacecraft stretching 450 Re in X and ~70 Re in Y: from the Lagrangian L1 point (ACE) to Earth (Geotail, GOES 10) to near L2 (Wind). Studying the data in both time and frequency domains, we find that the B and B_z of the ambient IMF are well correlated from L1 to Earth, but the correlation is lost over the L1-L2 distance. By contrast, magnetic cloud B and B_z remain highly correlated up to at least the L1-L2 distance (450 Re). In practical terms this means that one could have predicted the magnetic properties of the magnetic cloud on November 20, 2003, with twice the lead time.
