VARIATIONS IN THE BOUNDARY CONDITIONS OF THE HELIOSPHERE

The boundary conditions of the heliosphere can be expected to vary over relatively short timescales ( < 10~4 years) based on our understanding of local interstellar matter (ISM) and low density ISM in general. Radiative transfer models indicate that the LIC density and ioniza-tion are n(H°) ~ 0.19 cm~(-3) and n(e~-) ~ 0.06 cm~(-3), when the LIC only is modeled. Small interstellar dust grains appear to be trapped in the outer heliosheath regions, where they weakly polarize the light of nearby stars. This polarization correlates with ecliptic latitude and traces the interstellar magnetic field direction. It also may provide a way to monitor the solar wind-ISM interaction. The best data on nearby ISM, combined with cloud models, suggest the Sun entered the cluster of local interstellar clouds (CLIC) within the past 43,000/f years, and the local interstellar cloud (LIC) possibly as late as ~ 3,000 years ago, depending on the amount of clumpiness (f) in the CLIC. The Sun will exit the LIC in the next ~2,000-4,000 years.
