The observations on how forest vegetation reacts to the variations in the environmental conditions and especially to climate are important for explaining ecosystem dynamics through the biosphere. In the paper attempt is made to review the 2000-2009 dynamics of different forest types in a mountain region in South East Europe (Rhodope Mountain, Bulgaria). Forest fragmentation analysis was performed in order to define compact forest areas and investigate their natural dynamics. Satellite measured Leaf Area Index (LAI), Fraction of Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FPAR) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) from MODIS/Terra platform were analyzed for four selected forest stands in multi-year aspect.
