ASSESSING THE CARBON CONCENTRATION IN BORON CARBIDE: A COMBINED X- RAY DIFFRACTION AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS

Structural and chemical characterization of commercial and Rutgers University (RU) produced boron carbide powders was conducted. Literature data was used to develop fittings to determine bound carbon concentrations in boron carbide powders and ceramics based on the lattice parameter variations. X-ray diffraction techniques were used to determine free carbon content in commercial/RU powders using the spiking method. A relationship was established between the relative intensities of the carbon and boron carbide peaks to the percentage of added carbon, and the free-carbon content was obtained by extrapolation. The asymmetry of the carbon peak was modeled using curve fitting techniques based on the amorphous, disordered and ordered nature of carbon. The variations in the stoichiometry of different commercial boron carbide powders was also investigated.
