This study was undertaken to examine relationships between N concentrations in leaves and % N in grain at maturity, to see if the former could be used to predict the need for a topdressing of N. A grain yield of 7 t ha ha-1 -(88 % DM) combined with 1.89 % N in grain equates to a grain N requirement of 150 kg ha ha-1 -1. Chlorophyll (SPAD) readings in flag leaves at anthesis could also be used to predict % N in grain at maturity. The highest SPAD value was 45.2 for 1.89 % grain N. The SPAD meter has potential for predicting grain N requirements.
