Timing and Extent of Petroleum Processes in Lower Paleozoic Petroleum System in Western Part of the Baltic Basin

The late Paleozoic strati graphic section is the most oil-producing system in the Baltic Basin, with more then 40 years history of petroleum exploration and production and still remains a very active exploration area. The hydrocarbon potential of the Baltic Basin is related to the Cambrian, Ordovician and Silurian strata. The application of multidisciplinary approach involving geological, geochemical, geophysical research and numerical basin modelling has greately enhanced the level of understanding of the Lower Paleozoic petroleum system in western part of the Baltic Basin. Geochemical data revealed that the best source rocks in this petroleum system are Upper Cambrian and Tremadoc clay stones and mudstones, minor input had Caradoc and Llandovery strata. The Middle Cambrian sandstones are reservoir rock. Petroleum processes occured from early Devonian to the end of late Carboniferous. Hydrocarbon traps that developed during Variscian tectonic cycle are mainly faulted anticlines. The best petroleum condition existed at the Darlowo and Slupsk blocks, while the Leba block was the accumulation area.
