Exposure time, analyte concentration and ambient air temperature play significant roles in the adsorption of short-chain volatile fatty acids (VFAs) to solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fibers in free flowing air. This paper describes the effects of those factors on the performance of Carboxen/PDMS 75 μm fibers for measurement of VFAs. Timed experiments of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 minutes were performed for each of four concentrations of propionic (C3), butyric (C4) and valeric (C5) acids at 22, 30 and 40°C, respectively, using a gas permeation/dilution device of our own design. A dew point temperature of -11°C was maintained in each experiment. Results indicate that, for limited ranges of exposure times, there were linear effects of time and temperature on mass recovery of VFAs by Carboxen/PDMS fibers. A calibration equation for the effects of exposure time and temperature is presented. This is useful information when using SPME fibers to ascertain ambient air concentrations of short-chain VFAs.
