Analysis and evaluation of the sustainability level for domestic water use in the Monterrey Metropolitan Area

This research presents the current water management system for domestic water use at the Monterrey Metropolitan Area (MMA) in Mexico, in order to assess its sustainability level and to identify areas for improvement. The sustainability level was evaluated using sustainability indicators (SI). The research involves six steps. First, a selection of a series of indicators according to the Driving Forces - Pressure - State - Impact - Reponse (DPSIR) approach. The indicators were selected according to the relevance of the objective pursued. Second, gathering the data; where the main difficulty was to collect trustworthy, official and local data for the MMA. Third, the analysis of MMA actual water-use situation in the domestic sector. The fourth step, involves the analysis of sustainable economic parameters and programs for sustainable strategies. The fifth step involves the evaluation of the indicators. The last step involves the identification of areas for improvement in (domestic) water use. The results of this research shows that MMA has a good level of sustainability in the use of water due to some initiatives such as a micro-measurement program and water-loss reduction, user awareness programs, systems of tariffs, waste-water treatment among others programs, that have been implemented. Additional measures can be implemented to avoid overexploitation of the aquifer, to restrain the population increase at MMA, to promote and to regulate the use of water-saving devices. The outcome of this research shows that MMA cannot support actual population growth.
