Michigan Environmental Education Curriculum: A Unique Partnership

In 2003, the Governor of Michigan announced the beginning of a three-year project to develop an environmental education curriculum for Michigan middle schools. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) is using $1 million of the Clean Michigan Initiative funds for the project. MDEQ is working with the Michigan Department of Education and universities to develop and disseminate sound science-based supplementary environmental education curriculum materials for use by Michigan educators. The five unit topics that have been developed are: air quality, ecosystems, energy and resources, land, and water quality. The West and East Michigan Chapters of A&WMA have assisted with the development of the air quality unit, which is being written by Grand Valley State University. The air quality unit addresses the following questions: What gets into the air? Why should we be concerned about air quality? What are the sources of air pollution? How can we monitor air quality? How can we tell what the quality of the air is today? What has been done about air pollution? What can we do about air pollution? This paper describes details about how the curriculum was developed. As with other successful environmental education programs, there will be a network of trained facilitators who will present workshops to teachers. There will be an opportunity for integrating the A&WMA Environmental Resource Guides for Air Quality into the statewide training.
