The Along Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR) series of instruments were specifically designed to make highquality (errors of ~0.3 K or better) retrievals of SST. Initial operational products yielded regional biases of up to ~0.3 K for AATSR. Across the series, inter-satellite and inter-algorithm differences were up to ~0.2 K. ATSR SST products were significantly improved by the ATSR Reprocessing for Climate (ARC) project. Compared to operational ATSR SSTs the ARC data use improved SST retrieval techniques, cloud detection, and inter-satellite homogenisation. This has resulted in regional biases reduced to <0.1 K, inter-satellite differences <0.05 K, and stability of 5 mK per year as assessed against tropical moored buoys. The SST retrievals were developed without reference to in situ observations which allows the ARC dataset to be used for independent validation of in situ datasets.
