Discrete multi-tone transmissions are characterized by a slowly time variant transfer function. Fluctuations of noise power, however, can still badly impair the transmission quality. In this paper, we propose a DMT system that transmits data without coding as long as transmission quality is good. As soon as a disturbance is detected, Reed Solomon coding is applied to increase transmission quality again. New transmission parameters are negotiated, exchanged, and the system can finally disable coding and apply the new transmission parameters.
