Adaptive BER enhancement using frequency selective power distribution in DMT systems

In this paper, we will investigate the efficiency of a method used to decrease the bit error rate (BER) of practical point-to-multipoint transmission systems in data communication networks over wire lines. The main characteristic of such networks is that the channel attenuation changes slowly but randomly with time. According to our method called Frequency Selective Power Distribution (FSPD) the channel will be accurately estimated in the initialisation phase. This information will be subsequently used to establish communication in frequencies with low attenuation by spreading the saved power over the optimum channel frequency areas to achieve minimum system's BER. A permanent detection of channel deteriorations followed by a new connection establishment provides an adaptive BER enhancement and permanent connection even for strong attenuated channels. In our simulations the method is applied in a DMT system transmitting over an example channel and the results are compared to the performance of a well-known channel coding method, which applies an error correcting code with soft decoding and utilizes the whole available spectrum for transmission in order to enhance system's BER.
