Processing uranium for supply over the next decades will undergo change bought about through reserves, economics and environmental regulation. Technology advances will be rapid and those not adapting will find that the cost structures of conventional technology will place them at a competitive disadvantage. All uranium processing requires the uranium to be leached from the crushed or ground ore. Leaching is usually conducted using acid or alkali depending on the mineralogy of the ore. The resulting uranium is a soluble uranyl salt and is then processed via solid - liquid separation, soluble uranium concentration and purification routes. Processes historically have not been based on simple separation technologies with emphasis on down stream refining steps such as ion exchange and solvent extraction providing concentration and purification.
