Flooding tests indicate that hydrodynamically stable operation in a 100-mm diameter and 5-m contact height BPC is possible up to a flux of 55 m~3/m~2.h. Extraction mass transfer tests performed in the same BPC configuration as used for flooding tests yielded extraction efficiencies of > 99 percent. These tests were performed at a flux of 50m~3/m~2.h. When the flux was increased to 55 m~3/m~2.h the extraction efficiency dropped to 98 percent. Stripping mass transfer tests indicate that decreasing the flux (increasing residence time) and increasing the pulsation intensity improved stripping efficiency from 42 percent to 77 percent. There was insufficient solution to optimize these parameters which could best be done on an operating plant which does not have limitations of quantities. pH control during the stripping tests was easy and stable. On one occasion (when the injection valve malfunctioned), ADU did form, it nevertheless re-dissolved and did not affect the operation of the BPC at all.
