Indiana Harbor #7 (IH7) Blast Furnace of Mittal Steel USA, successfully underwent a major reline in 2003 and it was blown-in in the beginning of October 4, 2003. Major changes affecting the internal operation of the furnace were the installation of staves and a longer bell-less top chute. A significant change was also made in the design of the furnace hearth incorporating a deeper sump, a thinner bottom and a block concept. In this paper, the blow-in performance, the studies to understand the changes in burden distribution and the developed practical modifications to burden distribution are presented and discussed. The performance of the hearth and the development of the stabilized burn lines are also discussed.
