Carbon composite iron oxide pellets intentionally including residual volatile matter (V.M.) were proposed to decrease the initiation temperature for reduction reaction and to enhance the reaction rate of pellets under rising temperature conditions, such as in a blast furnace shaft. The carbonization of Newcastle blend coal under rising temperature conditions were interrupted at certain temperatures, i.e., maximum carbonization temperatures (T_(C, max), to obtain the semi-coal-char containing some residual V.M. The carbon composite iron oxide pellets using the semi-coal-char were prepared and reduced in nitrogen atmosphere. It was confirmed by the XRD analysis of the reduced pellets that the carbon composite iron oxide pellets using the semi-coal-char at T_(C, max) = 823 K have the highest reducibility of the iron oxide.
