Steelmaking dust from electric arc furnace (EAF) is a by-product that needs to be recycled for reasons of environmental protection and zinc recovery. The latter reason is more important in the case of carbon steel production. Various technologies are in use for commercial and in-house recycling of this dust. In the EU(15) countries, total crude steel production by EAF is about 65 million tons (year 2003), and respective dust generation is estimated to be in access of 1 million tons. The capacity of commercial dust recyclers can barely handle this amount. There is a need for better understanding among the stakeholders regarding logistic, economical and technical issues of dust recycling. This paper is an attempt to analyze the scale of dust recycling issue, highlight the problems and suggest an optimized logistic model for dust recycling. Additionally, a look into the expected scenario in the future is presented. To this effect, data on carbon steel production, dust generation and its transportation in the EU(15) countries was collected through questionnaire from 39 carbon steel producers.
