Recently, higher productivity operation of the blast furnace has been required to respond to the active steel market demand. Kakogawa No.3 Blast Furnace which has been aiming at high pulverized coal (PC) injection in order to decrease coke consumption, had to increase its productivity up to 2.3THM/d/m~3. To achieve both high productivity and a high coal injection/ low coke rate, it is important to ensure permeability and to decrease down-time due to tuyere damage. In Kakogawa No.3 BF, for the purpose of ensuring permeability, the burden material qualities were improved, especially the center charging coke quality. In addition, prevention of tuyere damage was realized by an appropriate change of tuyere structure and blast condition. As a result, productivity of 2.3 THM/d/m~3 with a coke rate lower than 335kg/THM could be achieved.
