Two advanced methods for separation and purification of products from ionic liquids by using supercritical carbon dioxide as co-solvent in extractions or as anti-solvent in precipitations are demonstrated. As an example, the recovery of the product N-acetyl-(S)-phenylalanine methyl ester (APAM) from the ionic liquid l-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][BF4]) is studied experimentally On the one hand, CO2 can be used to extract APAM from the ionic liquid phase without any measurable ionic liquid contamination. On the other hand, CO2 can be used to precipitate APAM out of the ionic liquid phase and to wash the solid product Both methods are a solution to the problem of reccnering soluble and thermally labile products from ionic liquids and can be used to recover other products from ionic liquids in a simple and straightforward way, without contamination b the ionic liquid.
