摘要

The health and economic development of any nation depends upon the presence of a vibrant healthcare system. A vibrant health care system, not unlike an engine, is composed of multiple interrelated parts all of which must function well for the system to perform properly. We discuss here not only the significance of health research but the factors that must be in place for it to play a strong role in community health and economic development. The development of what we call "translational research" is based upon the need to address questions whose answers directly feed into local and national policy making. This requires interplay between field and laboratory research. Defining areas of focus must include an understanding of the impact on disease of social elements including the family structure, sexual and reproductive norms and health policy (e.g. planning, management, monitoring and evaluation).
