To investigate the role of group A carbohydrate antibodies for active protection, mice were immunized intra-nasally with group A carbohydrate conjugated to tetanus toxoid and colonization was monitored after challenge. Compared to controls, immunized mice were significantly protected against nasal challenge with live group A streptococci. This study demonstrates that the group A carbohydrate conjugate antigen is both immunogenic and protective against streptococcal infections.
