A short while ago the availability of silicon feedstock seemed to be the main factor limiting the photovoltaic industry. But changes in the market like the global economic recession accompanied by the financial crisis and the decision of Spain to change its feed-in-tariff policies very fast showed that there are demand limits. Some consultants had to revise their forecasts regarding demand, price and profits significantly for the whole industry. In the changed situation it turns out that PV based on crystalline Silicon can compete very well with alternative PV technologies. It is also proven that quality and performance only in times of shortage are subjects of discussion and compromises. Excellent polysilicon quality is a stable base for lower total cost of ownership throughout the PV value chain.
