Objective: The aim of this study is to determine whether the preventive herbal therapy using Dai-kenchu-to inhibits intestinal obstruction following curative resection for colorectal cancer,Materials: Consecutive 272 patients underwent resection between November 1, 2001 and October 31, 2005 Results: From initial 272 patients, 173 remained after exclusions The 173 patients were divided into two groups by minimization method. The patients were given 27g of Dai-kenchu-to /day orally (n=86) and control (n=87). There were significant differences in the incidence of abdominal pain and abnormal bowel movement between the two groups (1.16% vs. 9.20%, p=0.042 and 3.49% vs. 13,79%, p=0.033, respectively).Conclusion: The preventive herbal therapy using Dai-kenchu-to has the significantly positive effects on abdominal pain and abnormal bowel movement.
