Disilyloxane-Containing Silsesquioxanes Revealed by ESI-FTMS

Unlike conventional silsesquioxanes which have been studied extensively, studies on silicone resins containing disilyloxane units were scarce and only a number of patents covered the preparation of organosilicon resins comprising recurring disilane units from organochlorodisilanes. In most earlier works, gel was formed during the preparation of this type of resins, which had limited application potentials. Thorough characterizations of disilyloxane-containing resins were not available either. There is a continued need for a silicone resin containing disilyloxane units that is soluble in organic solvents, is thermally or otherwise curable, is gel-free and can be prepared at low temperatures. By obtaining detailed compositions and structures of oligomeric disilyoxane-containing silsesquioxanes using mass spectrometry, we hope to achieve a better understanding of this novel type of materials.
