Collision-induced dissociation (CID), employed in most tandem mass spectrometry applications, produces insufficient internal energy to efficiently dissociate very large projectile ions such as some proteins and non-covalent complexes. Surface-Induced Dissociation (SID), a similar ion activation method to CID, is believed to deposit high average internal energies in a large sudden energy "step" resulting in extensive ion fragmentation.
