Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) contains an array of proteins that may serve as biomarkers of different disease states and conditions in the lungs of respiratory patients. Lung bacterial infections in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients are most devastating and new markers would be useful to identify infection type and stage, and response to therapy. SELDI can quickly screen clinical fluid samples for disease-associated proteins that can then be characterized with other technologies such as FTICR MS. SELDI is particularly useful for detecting proteins in the 2-20 kDa range, which is an appropriate range for FTICR monoisotopic mass measurements and top-down sequencing. Therefore, with its ultrahigh accuracy and resolution, 12T FTICR MS is the ideal instrument for characterizing SELDI-discovered biomarkers.
