In the last few years, the interest in exploring the proteome of body fluids has broadened the search for new biomarkers of diseases. Urine proteome is a promising tool for gathering knowledge of kidney physiology. This valuable reference database of urinary proteins will be useful in identifying biomarkers, particularly in renal destruction or abnormal metabolisms. Two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) has been widely used in proteomic studies in the search for markers of specific physiological states. Several inherent limitations of 2D-gel electrophoresis, including reproducibility and difficulty in efficient separation of highly basic, hydrophobic and low molecular weight proteins, make it insufficient for urine proteome research.
