B. subtilis, a model prokaryiotic organism, is a gram(+) bacterium of significant industrial importance. Its genome consists of about 4100 genes, 2500 of which are estimated to be expressed during growth. Previous MS-based analyses of the proteome have identified in total 1200 gene products in the log phase.
