Natural products are an incredible source of chemical diversity. This rich pool has been exploited in many fields, including therapeutic development; however, challenges inherent in traditional discovery approaches, as well as myriad metabolites that are not produced under standard bacterial culture conditions have slowed the identification of novel natural products. We are exploiting a strain of S. coelicolor with altered expression of Crp, a global regulator of metabolism,1 to activate conventionally dormant genes. Mass spectrometric analysis and informatics tools aid in prioritization and structure elucidation of new compounds.
