The reaction is more efficient under ultrapure conditions (air-tight conditions, no atmospheric impurities in the background) than in conventional APPI, but takes place in both. Fragmentation of [M+77]+ of pyridine required high collision energy in MS/MS studies and resulted in formation of several ions → the ion at [M+77]+ is not an adduct, but a covalently formed reaction product.
