Corals reefs are important ecosystems. Over the past few decades global decline in coral cover and coral health have been documented with increasing frequency. Coral death is often preceded by coral bleaching: 1. Bleaching describes a coral that has become pale in appearance. 2. Pigmentation results from the loss of the coral's symbiotic, intracellular, single-celled algae1 - these algae belong to the genus Symbiodinium.
