Cycloisomerization of enynes has emerged as a powerful tool in the formation of complex carbon skeletons. 1,2- and 1,3-Propargylic migrations of acetates catalyzed by gold(I) are well known processes. We have now found that propargylic ethers undergo 1,5-migration in gold(I)-catalyzed cycloisomerization of 1,6-enynes. This transformation gives rise in a single step stereoselectively to tricyclic compounds related to the naturally occurring sesquiterpenes globulol (la), epiglobulol (lb), and halichonadin F (1c) (Scheme 1). Open allyl-gold carbocations were proposed as intermediates in this process.
