This paper extends existing activity identification methods and describes a new method to identify and assess the activity of chickens with different gait scores in a small flock. The chickens were scored for their degree of lameness by experts according to the method ofKestin et al. (1992). Five birds were selected in each of six gait score groups (GSO to GS5). The chickens used were in total 30 Ross-308 chickens at the age of 26 days. The experimental period of in total 12 days was subdivided intotwo times six days were two different experiments were carried out. The first experiment (day 1-6) was done in a laboratory test installation consisting of a stainless steel compartment with six pens integrated. In each pen, the same number of birds having the same gait score level was housed with a stocking density of five birds per m~2. In the second experiment (day 7 - 12), the separation fences between all pens were removed. Thus, the different chicken groups were merged to one group and were kept together within the stainless steel compartment. In both experiments, there was a significant relation between the gait score given by an expert and the activity monitored by image analysis. The broilers with gait score 3 (GS3) showed a significantly higher activity than other gait scores in both experiments (P<0.05). In both experiments; GS4 and GS5 showed a significantly lower activity (P<0.05).
