Efforts to improve the dynamic response of supercharged internal combustion engines by adding compressed air are well known. These efforts exhibited however no success, since the response of the applied components was too slow. This resulted in a large demand of additional compressed air, which the serial production compressors could not deliver. By an advantageous combination of two parallel technical developments within the last years: - Electronic Diesel injection systems at commercial vehicles, e.g. Common Rail - High dynamic electrically controlled components within the air brake systems of commercial vehicles, it was possible to develop a system, based on serial production parts, which could be installed into the engine charge air system and which provides a significant improvement to the response and the acceleration of the engine and the vehicle. The minimized additional compressed air can be provided by an optimized compressed air system based on serial production parts. This paper presents the development and the function of the system, as well as the results of simulations, dynamometer and vehicle tests.
