Patient progress modelling was originally developed in the context of the analysis of leukaemia drug trials. Typically, such modelling involves determining a finite number of different health states in which a patient might be at various times, deriving appropriate sojourn time distributions and transition probabilities to reflect the transfers made between these and then the derivation of time-dependent state probabilities. We describe the development of a "calculation engine" that can be used within Microsoft Excel to facilitate such modelling and its potential application concerning the use of chemotherapy following curative surgery for lung cancer.
